Instagram has been a rage for quite some time now, and its popularity is all set to soar higher. Having already overtaken Facebook and Snapchat, the launch of IGTV, is now going to target Youtube. So is this the next big thing? It might be.
The IGTV app, which will be accessible from inside the instagram home screen will also exist as a stand alone app, and will allow users to upload videos up to 1 hour in length as opposed to the restrictive one minute. Unlike “Stories”, which appear on top of the page in the form of bubbles, IGTV videos will appear as rectangular thumbnails at the bottom, and will go full screen once you click on it. Instagram CEO, Kevin Systrom, onstage claimed that “It’s time for video to movie forward and evolve.”
How IGTV works:
IGTV is not only for big name celebrities, it will let anyone be a creator. You will be able to upload vertical videos through the app or web. Except new and smaller accounts, most people will be able to upload hour long videos immediately, and that option will expand to everyone eventually.
The IGTV app will be available globally on IOS and Android, as well as in the Instagram app. Systrom said, “We made it a dedicated app so that you can tap on it and enjoy the video without all the distraction.”
In IGTV’s dedicated app, viewers will be able to swipe through a variety of longer-form videos, or visit a Browse tab of popular videos which are personally recommended, creators they are following, as well as the option to continue watching videos they had started previously. Users will also get callouts from the IGTV button alerting them about new content.
Systrom thinks than since creators will be investing a lot of time in IGTV videos, he would definitely want to make it sustainable in future by offering them a way to monetize. This means that there’s a reasonable chance for ads to end up here although there aren’t any at the moment.
With more than 1 billion users on Instagram, IGTV is bound to become popular, not only for people trying to earn money but also to grow their audience. This altogether gives rise to a new form of influencer marketing. With IGTV in the picture, influencers can speak about a service or product with no time restriction, making it easier to gain potential customers on the platform.
